PETER RIGG FROM GREATER MANCHESTER SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL RAPE AND ROBBERY IN BURY

In a disturbing series of criminal acts, Peter Rigg, a 29-year-old resident of Walmsley Road, Bury, Greater Manchester, has been convicted and sentenced for heinous crimes involving sexual assault and robbery. The incidents, which shocked the local community, highlight the dangerous behavior of the offender and the severity of his actions.

Rigg was found guilty of raping a grandmother after breaking into her home in a desperate attempt to find money for drugs. The assault was particularly traumatic for the victim, who was held hostage during the ordeal. According to court reports, Rigg threatened her with a meat cleaver, a weapon he later was found to possess in his bedsit, and coerced her into withdrawing £500 from her bank account. The attack left the elderly woman traumatized and shaken, underscoring the brutality of Rigg's crime.

Adding to his criminal record, just days prior to the attack on the grandmother, Rigg had committed another violent robbery. During this incident, he targeted a disabled man, whom he strangled and threatened with the intent to set him on fire. This pattern of violence and intimidation demonstrates Rigg's propensity for extreme and reckless behavior.

At Bolton Crown Court, Rigg pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and one count of robbery. The court sentenced him to a total of 17 years in prison. Furthermore, Rigg will be subject to a parole review after serving at least 10 years, meaning he will remain on licence and under supervision for a significant period after his release.

Judge Timothy Clayson addressed Rigg directly during the sentencing, emphasizing the danger he poses to the public. He stated, "You do pose a significant risk of serious harm to members of the public. You are not merely capable of, but have a desire to commit, offences of extreme gravity. Your pleasure is derived by subjecting control over your victims and that is a powerful motivating force you cannot control." The judge’s comments reflect the gravity of Rigg’s actions and the concern for community safety moving forward.
