In 2006, Nikki Higgins, a sex worker, was brutally attacked and strangled to death by a man who picked her up in Hanley.Her body was found in February 2001.
The offender, Alan Mclaren, a father of six, initially evaded justice for years.
His case even featured on BBC Crimewatch, as detectives endeavored to determine what happened to Nikki.
It was not until 2004 that police arrested Mclaren, after linking the car in which Nikki was last seen to a former partner of his.
Mclaren subsequently admitted to the crimes of rape and murder and was sentenced to a minimum of 18 years in prison.
