GRAHAM MARRIOTT SCOUT LEADER FROM WELLINGBOROUGH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Wellingborough, Graham Marriott, a 39-year-old scout leader, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young boys and the production and distribution of child pornography.The investigation into Marriott's activities was launched after police in London uncovered a suspected paedophile ring operating across the country.
During a raid on Marriott’s residence in Wellingborough, specifically on Sandpiper Lane, authorities discovered a trove of illegal material, including over 1,436 child sexual abuse images and a three-hour video recording that explicitly depicted Marriott abusing multiple boys.
Detectives believe that Marriott’s criminal activities may extend beyond what has been uncovered so far, with suspicions that he may have committed additional offenses against other vulnerable children.
The police efforts led to the identification of two of his victims, but efforts to identify others remain ongoing.
At Northampton Crown Court, Judge Thomas Corrie delivered a stern judgment, condemning Marriott’s actions as perverted and long-standing.
The judge stated, “What you did was for your own perverted purposes over quite a long period when you groomed and sexually abused these boys.
Not content with doing these terrible things, you recorded them and with some of these images, you sent them on to a fellow pervert.
It is perfectly clear you are sexually obsessed with young boys and downloaded images from the internet to fuel your fantasies and act them out.” Prosecutor Simon Carr outlined the extent of Marriott’s predatory behavior, revealing that the scout leader had used his position within the scouting movement to befriend and then sexually exploit young boys.
The court heard that Marriott would often tie up and blindfold his victims before filming their abuse, further demonstrating the calculated and malicious nature of his crimes.
Marriott’s defense, represented by Matthew Lowe, acknowledged the gravity of the charges, stating, “It goes without saying that Marriott has pleaded guilty to the most appalling crimes which he recognises come with a custodial sentence of some length.” As part of his sentence, Marriott has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and is permanently barred from working with children.
He admitted to one charge of gross indecency, five counts of indecent assault, and 16 charges related to child sexual abuse images.
The discovery of a video at Marriott’s home was pivotal in revealing the full extent of his crimes.
It became evident that Marriott exploited his trusted position as a scout master to groom and abuse boys under his care, while also creating child sexual abuse images to share with other paedophiles involved in a broader online paedophile ring.
Head of Northamptonshire Police’s child protection unit, Detective Inspector Chris Few, commented on the case, saying, “We are satisfied with the sentence which reflects the extreme seriousness of these offences.
They came to light after the Metropolitan Police raided a man’s home in London last year and found evidence of him trading indecent images of young boys over the internet to a paedophile ring which included Marriott.
It later transpired that Marriott was making the indecent images of a boy he was abusing.”
