BLACKWOOD MAN WITH HALF A MILLION INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN JAILED
A man identified as Toby Smith, aged 39, residing on Elmin Way, Pontllanfraith, Blackwood, has been sentenced for possessing a massive collection of indecent images, including hundreds of images of children. The court learned that on February 22, 2024, police executed a search warrant at his residence, seizing two hard drives and a Lenovo laptop containing 500,000 images and videos.
Due to the volume, prosecutors reviewed a sample revealing 606 Category A images of children, with 344 still images and 262 videos.
The images depicted horrific sexual abuse, most of female children, with the youngest only 18 months old.
Additionally, there were 101 Category B images (83 static, 48 videos), and 429 Category C images (376 static, 53 videos).
Also found were nearly 10,000 indicative images, some indistinguishable from adults.
Smith also possessed two explicit adult images and a 21-minute video of a woman being raped.
The court described a 12-minute Category A video featuring an eight-year-old child, where the abuser used phrases like 'choke on it' and 'are you a whore?'.
Smith claimed he was not eligible for legal aid and gave his own mitigation, expressing regret for his actions, stating it started with a large collection of pornography that spiraled out of control.
Although he asserted he posed no threat to children and had never harmed anyone, Judge Mills acknowledged the severity of his offending.
Smith was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, with six to be served in custody, and ordered to comply with a ten-year sexual harm prevention order and be registered as a sex offender for ten years.
