ABUSIVE MAN BRADLEY MCCOY JAILED FOR STRANGULATION AND ASSAULT
An abusive man strangled his partner after she discovered a video of him having sex with another woman. The incident was part of a pattern of abuse, including assaults when he was intoxicated and damage to her phone and car keys.
The victim described feeling numb and suffering from sleepless nights, anxiety, and depression, fearing his return.
On March 16, he backhanded her, causing a black eye.
The court heard that on May 3, McCoy strangled her after she confronted him about a sexual video, responding to her slap by wrapping his hands around her throat and restricting her breathing.
The relationship was temporarily ended but later resumed.
On May 10, he threw her iPhone against a wall, breaking it.
On May 21, he repeatedly visited her home in the early hours, threw her car keys onto the street breaking them, and after she asked him to leave, he returned with his dog, yelled at her, and accused her of kicking him out.
When police arrived after neighbors called, McCoy tried to strike her again, threw a can of alcohol at her and the officers, and made comments like, "F*** (the victim), I will murder her when I get out," and "I need a restraining order, or she does, as one of us will end up dead or in prison." McCoy, of Llwyn-on Road, pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation, assault causing actual bodily harm, battery, and two counts of criminal damage.
The court acknowledged his past conviction for possession of cocaine.
The victim said: "I find it hard to explain the full impact.
I feel numb and have experienced sleepless nights.
I struggle to concentrate as I'm scared he will return to my home.
I am constantly nervous I will see him in the street.
I already suffer with anxiety and depression.
I am more emotional than before and constantly tearful." In mitigation, his solicitor, Christopher Evans, said McCoy recognized he was intoxicated and described their relationship as toxic.
He noted that McCoy has employment as a machine operator and would likely lose his job if sent to prison, citing issues with alcohol and substance misuse, drinking four to eight cans daily.
Recorder John Philpotts sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment and imposed a five-year restraining order.
