STEVEN WELLS FROM KETTERING ESCAPES RAPE CHARGE IN NORTHAMPTON SEX CASE
In a highly controversial legal outcome, a mother from Northampton has expressed her profound disappointment and outrage following the acquittal of Steven Wells, a 32-year-old security guard from Kettering, who was accused of raping her 13-year-old daughter. The incident, which garnered significant public attention, involved a complex two-month relationship between Wells and the young girl, during which he was found guilty of multiple other sexual offences but not of the most serious charge of rape.Wells, who was employed at Greyfriars Bus Station in Northampton, faced a series of charges related to his inappropriate conduct with the minor. Before the trial, he admitted to six counts of indecent assault and two charges of indecency with a child, yet he maintained that he did not force the girl into sexual activity. Despite his guilty pleas on these counts, the jury acquitted him of the charge of raping the girl, a decision that has left many in the community feeling unsettled.
The court proceedings revealed that Wells was to be sentenced to four years in prison for the other sexual offences. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure intended to monitor his activities and prevent further harm. The judge, Peter Crawford, emphasized during the sentencing that Wells had engaged in grooming behavior, using his age, authority, and financial influence to manipulate the young girl into accepting his advances. The judge stated, "By a series of more and more intimate acts, you were eventually successful in persuading her to have sex with you. She did consent to have sex with you, but in a sense that is one of the worst aspects of your crimes."
Following the verdict, the girl’s mother voiced her anguish, saying, "It’s disgusting. I’m sorry we brought this case in the first place. My daughter is going to be totally devastated. It’s taken a year and more for her to start getting over what happened. I believe that this man will do something like this again. If he got into a relationship with a woman with children, how is she going to know he’s on the Sex Offenders’ Register?"
Defense attorney Steven Evans, representing Wells, explained that his client had already spent 16 months in remand and was likely to serve an additional 16 months before release. Evans added, "He was clearly aware she was under age and acknowledges the cost of his behaviour. However, the doctors do not believe he has the attributes of a paedophile."
Wells’s case has sparked widespread debate about the justice system’s handling of such sensitive cases, especially regarding the distinction between different sexual offences and the implications of the verdict for the victim and the community at large.
