KETTERING WOMAN STARVES AND NEGLECTS DOG, GETS 12-MONTH COMMUNITY ORDER
The RSPCA had visited Dunkley’s home on a number of occasions with welfare concerns about her pet dog – a female Dogue de Bordeaux called Koda. She had been given advice as well as a veterinary voucher, but Koda’s condition did not improve.
On January 6, 2025, RSPCA Inspector Susan Haywood attended Dunkley’s home with police.
Inspector Haywood was shown Koda who was now severely underweight.
The bones of her spine, hips and ribs were clearly visible and her demeanour was timid and withdrawn.
Inspector Haywood told Dunkley that she was concerned about Koda’s poor body condition, which could be due to an underlying health issue or simply lack of food.
She still hadn’t been seen by a vet despite her owner being provided with a voucher.
Koda was seized by police and taken to a vet for examination, where it was found that she weighed just 21.1kg and was visibly very underweight.
She was given a body condition score of just 2/9.
Her ribs, pelvic bones and spine were all prominent through her fur.
The vet found no underlying medical reason to explain Koda’s low weight.
The vet gave the opinion that Koda had not had her needs met by the person responsible for her and had been denied an adequate level of nutrition (feeding ).
She received worming and flea treatment and was put on a nutritionally adequate diet to assess her ability to gain weight following feeding.
Koda has recovered well in the RSPCA’s care and will be rehomed.
