A man found guilty of sexually assaulting a young girl in Kettering has avoided immediate incarceration as a judge imposed a conditional sentence.
Adam Hughson, 35 years old and a resident of Holtlands Drive in Derby, was given a suspended prison sentence after Northampton Crown Court concluded he has a genuine prospect for rehabilitation.
During the hearing, defense solicitor William Pope contended that a sentence suspended for rehabilitation, coupled with supportive measures, would better facilitate Hughson's reform than a shorter direct custodial sentence.
The court examined a pre-sentence report that showed positive indications of Hughson’s capacity for change.
Delivering his verdict, His Honour Judge Rupert Mayo stated, “With additional efforts, there is a reasonable chance you can be rehabilitated, which justifies suspending your sentence.” Hughson was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.
He must engage in the Horizon programme, designed specifically for men with sex offence convictions.
He is also required to complete 30 days of rehabilitative activities and will be registered as a sex offender for ten years.
