DEWSBURY MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULTING PARTNER WITH WASHING BASKET AND CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A man threw a washing basket at his partner– then laughed in her face as she tried to call police. The force of the assault knocked the terrified victim downstairs and caused picture frames on the wall to smash.
Her attacker, Steven Tilley, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and criminal damage.
Prosecutor Shamalia Qureshi told Kirklees Magistrates' Court that the victim's ordeal lasted for 30 minutes at her Mirfield home.
The couple had been together for a year but had frequent verbal arguments.
On February 3, after an argument on their way back from the pub to The Embankment address, she told him to go to bed.
This angered him, and he got in her face.
She then heard glass smashing in the bedroom, which frightened her, and she decided to sleep downstairs.
She saw a vase had been broken, which upset her.
Steven Tilley picked up a laundry basket as she went downstairs.
The basket was thrown, knocking picture frames and causing her to fall downstairs, and he laughed at her when she called the police.
He also punched a door, causing damage.
The victim suffered reddening on her leg from falling and was scared enough to call police.
During court proceedings, he admitted to throwing the basket but claimed he did not throw it at his partner.
Mitigating lawyer Ian Whiteley said the couple had been out for a meal with friends, and the victim then argued with one of them, leading to the incident.
He stated: 'The argument continued, and when the complainant went downstairs, he accepts he pushed her.
It’s out of character and he has no previous convictions for assault.' Judge Lowe fined Tilley £335, with additional court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £33.
