MAN AVOIDS JAIL AFTER HEADBUTTING EX DURING VIOLENT ATTACK IN MIRFIELD
A jealous man identified as Quaid Price, who grabbed his ex-partner by the throat and headbutted her after discovering texts from another male, has been sentenced but avoided jail.
The incident occurred while their 10-month-old child was present in the house.
Price admitted to witnessing violence growing up and his actions included headbutting his ex to the forehead, punching her stomach, and making threats.
The victim reported that the child was there during two phases of the assault, the first in the living room where he punched her three to four times to the stomach, and later when he headbutted her after taking the child into the bedroom.
The injuries included a significant bump on her head.
Despite the assault, Price, of no fixed address, claimed the child was not in the room during the incidents.
He pleaded guilty to assault by beating.
The court was told he was currently sofa surfing and claiming Universal Credit, with the solicitor explaining he had witnessed domestic violence in his childhood, conditioning him to act similarly.
District Judge Michael Fanning described the attack as 'sustained' and emphasized its potential impact on the child, noting that very young children can sense violence and it affects them profoundly.
Considering his lack of previous convictions and potential for rehabilitation, Price received a 18-week suspended sentence, along with community orders requiring 25 days of rehabilitation activities, 70 hours of unpaid work, and payment of costs and victim surcharge.
The judge stated that the suspended sentence is a real punishment for him that will hang over him for a year.
