MICHELLE JOPLIN'S HORRIFIC NEGLECT IN MORECAMBE LEADS TO DOG'S DEATH
In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Michelle Joplin, formerly of Ganneys Meadow Road in Birkenhead, Wirral, Merseyside, and currently residing at Marine Road West, Morecambe LA3 1BU, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to her pet dog. The incident, which took place between May 24 and June 16, 2023, involved her three-year-old bully-type dog named Daisy, who was subjected to severe neglect that ultimately led to her being put to sleep.According to court reports, Daisy was discovered in a state of extreme distress and physical collapse. A veterinarian who examined her described her condition as dire: her right side was soaked with urine, and her skin was inflamed, sore, and in a state of neglect. The dog’s nails were grossly overgrown, and she was suffering from hair loss, indicating prolonged neglect and poor health management.
Attempts to move Daisy caused her to become aggressive, a clear sign of pain and distress, which further underscored the severity of her suffering. The veterinarian noted that Daisy had been left in deplorable conditions, with her suffering ignored for an extended period. The neglect was so severe that the dog was unable to stand or move comfortably, and her condition was described as being in a critical state when finally examined.
Michelle Joplin admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal by neglecting her responsibilities and failing to address the signs of her pet’s ill health. During the court proceedings, she explained that she had been “in a really bad place,” which she claimed contributed to her neglectful behavior.
Peter Mitchell, representing the RSPCA, emphasized that Daisy had been in a collapsed state for a significant amount of time before she was finally seen by a veterinarian. The neglect was evident, and the suffering endured by Daisy was deemed unacceptable by animal welfare standards.
In addition to Daisy, Joplin’s other two dogs, Marge and Skye, were rehomed to new owners, ensuring they would no longer be subjected to her care.
As part of her sentencing, Joplin received an 18-month community order, which includes 150 hours of unpaid work, an alcohol treatment requirement, and participation in rehabilitation programs. Furthermore, she was handed a five-year ban on keeping dogs, which will remain in effect until January 2029. The case has drawn significant attention from animal welfare advocates and highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglect.
