PETERBOROUGH MAN CONVICTED OF KILLING WIFE ELISABETH
Michael Carroll was convicted of the murder of his wife, Elisabeth Carroll, after he strangled her at their residence in Peterborough. The killing took place on 21 May last year, when Elisabeth was discovered dead on Kings Road in Fletton.
Although Carroll, aged 60, initially denied the murder charge, he later pleaded guilty to manslaughter citing diminished responsibility.
A majority verdict at Cambridge Crown Court found him guilty of murder following a trial that earlier failed to produce a verdict.
Police reports indicated that Carroll admitted to strangling his wife after being summoned to work for missing his shift.
His employers had contacted authorities, which resulted in police locating Elisabeth’s body.
Detective Inspector Richard Wall commented, ‘Michael Carroll was experiencing significant stress due to financial problems at the time, but this does not justify the killing of his beloved wife, Elisabeth.’ Authorities also revealed that Elisabeth had successfully battled cancer and was looking forward to her retirement.
Carroll’s sentencing date is to be set at a later time.
