SEX OFFENDER JAILED AFTER FLOUTING COURT ORDER
A sex offender who violated a court-imposed restriction by using an internet-enabled phone has been sentenced to prison.
Saffian Liaqat, aged 31, was under community management by specialized officers when they conducted a visit to his residence in Peterborough in August of the previous year.
The terms of his sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) prohibited him from possessing or using any devices that could access the internet or store digital images without prior police notification.
The order also required him to hand over any such devices upon request.
During their visit, Liaqat claimed he had lost a basic, non-internet device that he was allowed to keep under the restrictions.
However, officers later discovered an internet-capable phone belonging to him concealed on top of a wardrobe.
A detailed examination of the device uncovered evidence that Liaqat had been using it to access and browse various social media sites.
The individual, from Longthorpe in Peterborough, admitted to breaching his SHPO, and on Friday, 23 January, he was sentenced to a year in prison at Huntingdon Law Courts.
