IMTIAZ BAIG PETERBOROUGH MAN JAILED FOR GROOMING AND RAPE IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE HOTEL
In a case that highlights the dangers posed by predatory individuals online, Imitaz Baig, a man from Peterborough, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after grooming a teenage girl on Facebook and subsequently raping her in a hotel located in Newark, Nottinghamshire.Baig, aged 37, initiated contact with the girl through social media in late 2014.
Over the course of several months, he maintained persistent communication with her via Facebook messages and phone calls.
During these exchanges, Baig falsely presented himself as a businessman involved in the luxury car rental industry, claiming to have access to prestige vehicles and helicopters.
He also made offers of money, attempting to entice her further into his plans.
Despite his repeated efforts to meet her in person, the girl, who was only 15 at the time, was cautious and wary of his intentions.
She refused to meet him on multiple occasions, showing understandable apprehension.
However, Baig’s persistence eventually paid off when he convinced her to meet him at a hotel in Newark, Nottinghamshire, on the 29th of August, 2015.
Upon their meeting, Baig provided her with alcoholic drinks, even though she had explicitly asked for lemonade, indicating a possible attempt to intoxicate her.
During their encounter, he discussed the possibility of involving her in his business ventures, further attempting to manipulate her.
The situation took a dark turn when Baig forced her to undress and committed a sexual assault.
Following the assault, the girl managed to persuade Baig to go into the bathroom.
Seizing the opportunity, she quickly grabbed his clothing and fled the hotel.
She then met her brother nearby, who took her to Newark Police Station.
There, she handed over Baig’s belongings, which became crucial evidence in the investigation.
Baig, who resided at Straight Drove, Farcet, near Peterborough, initially claimed to hotel staff that he had been robbed.
He was provided with clothing and then left the scene in a taxi.
However, law enforcement officers were able to trace the vehicle, and it was stopped on the A1 near Grantham.
Baig was arrested and subsequently charged with rape.
Following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court in January, Baig was convicted of the charges.
He appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court on the 5th of February for sentencing.
The court’s decision resulted in a significant prison sentence, reflecting the severity of his actions.
Detective Inspector Nikki Smith of Nottinghamshire Police commented on the case, emphasizing the dangers posed by individuals like Baig.
She stated, “This case underlines the lengths that dangerous individuals like Baig will go to in order to entice a child to engage in sexual activity.” DI Smith further explained, “Baig spent months grooming his victim through Facebook and phone messages, and was not even deterred by the occasions when she did not turn up to meet him.
She was rightly wary of his motives initially, but he persisted and did eventually persuade her to meet him with the sole intention of having sex with her whether she consented or not.” She praised the bravery of the young girl, saying, “I would like to pay tribute to the courage of the victim.
Despite the trauma of the incident and the effect of the alcohol he had persuaded her to drink, she had the presence of mind to take his clothing and other belongings to prevent him from fleeing the hotel.” DI Smith also commended the quick and effective police work, noting, “Her brother, whom she had already arranged to meet to pick her up, sensibly took her to Newark Police Station where excellent work by the officer who met ensured that crucial evidence, including the telephone correspondence between Baig and the girl, was quickly obtained.
More quick work by the officer ensured that Baig’s taxi was stopped as he tried to return home.” Thanks to the diligent investigation, the support provided to the victim and her family, and the swift law enforcement response, Imitaz Baig has been convicted of rape and is now beginning a lengthy prison term, serving justice for his heinous actions in Peterborough and Nottinghamshire.
