CHRISTOPHER HARRIS SHOCKS BLACKWOOD WITH CHILD SEX IMAGE SCANDAL IN CARDIFF COURT
In December 2011, a disturbing case unfolded at Cardiff Crown Court involving Christopher Harris, a 43-year-old man residing in Blackwood. Harris was brought before the court on serious charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images of children, as well as allegations of sexual activity with a minor.According to court proceedings, Harris had downloaded nearly 10,000 images depicting child abuse, a revelation that shocked those present. The court was informed that Harris, who lived at Golwg-y-Bont in Blackwood, had admitted to 18 counts of making or possessing indecent images of children. Additionally, he faced three charges concerning sexual acts with a minor. The severity of his actions was underscored by the judge, who described Harris as a “deviant” and condemned his viewing of these heinous acts involving a boy as young as ten years old.
During the hearing, Harris explained to police that his interest in young boys had begun to develop as his marriage started to falter. This personal detail was presented as part of the evidence, highlighting the disturbing motivations behind his actions. The court heard that Harris’s criminal activities resulted in a prison sentence totaling two years, with one year for the offenses against the young boy and an additional 18 months for his involvement with the vile images.
Judge Stephen Hopkins QC did not hold back in his remarks, stating, “I have had to view a selection of this material, and what sexually arouses deviants like you causes abhorrence and even distress in others. For these still pictures and videos to be produced, children are being abused.” The judge emphasized the disturbing nature of the content, noting that some videos contained sound, which made the viewing experience even more nauseating for any reasonable person.
Prosecutor Jeremy Jenkins revealed that Harris, who was earning approximately £30,000 annually, had his life turned upside down by the police investigation. The Metropolitan Police’s Operation Greenheart led to a raid on his residence in February, during which computer equipment was seized. The authorities uncovered a staggering 9,577 images and videos, with over 5,600 of these files available for sharing, indicating a significant level of distribution and possession.
Further evidence presented in court included communications between Harris and others with similar interests, suggesting a network of individuals involved in sharing such material. Harris’s defense attorney, Andrew Jones, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “It’s his own fault, but this has shattered his life beyond repair.”
As a result of his convictions, Harris was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Blackwood and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals involved in the production and distribution of child abuse material.
