NELSON MAN SHARIKH RIAZ JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RACIST BEHAVIOUR
A Nelson man who sexually assaulted a woman on a bus after a racist rant has been jailed.Sharikh Riaz, 27, of Every Street, appeared before Preston Crown Court charged with multiple offences including possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possessing a knife in a public place, threatening or abusive behaviour, racially or religiously aggravated harassment, and sexual assault on a female.
The charges relate to two incidents, with the first on January 25.
At Blackburn bus station, Riaz argued with a woman and made racist remarks, then accused her of being a 'bird' and threatened violence.
Female staff recorded him abusing a woman and calling people derogatory names.
On a bus from Blackburn to Preston, CCTV showed Riaz sitting next to a woman for five minutes, during which he placed his arm around her, then moved onto her leg and began moving his hand up and down.
He also asked a young teenager about her virginity and made her uncomfortable.
A victim impact statement detailed how the victim now feels wary and more reserved after the incident, avoiding certain seats and people since.
Another victim said Riaz's actions made her feel sick.
While under investigation, Riaz contacted police claiming he had a knife with the intent to stab someone.
Officers found a knife in his sock; he was arrested and released.
He rang police again, threatening to find and stab someone with another knife.
Judge Richard Gioserano sentenced Riaz to 14 months for sexual assault and public order offences, and 8 months for the knife offences, to be served consecutively.
Due to time served, he will be released in three months on licence.
