A controlling man who raped a woman on two occasions has been given a sentence of more than 13 years.

Shafnan Yousaf, from Nelson, was found guilty by a jury at Burnley Crown Court on two counts of rape and one count of controlling and coercive behaviour.

Judge Sara Dodd said Yousaf's conduct was "calculated to humiliate and degrade the victim" over a period of around six-and-a-half years.

She also said Yousaf, of Maurice Street, had no insight into the effect of his behaviour.

Michael Goldwater, mitigating, said Yousaf arrived in the country from Pakistan in 2008, with more family arriving in 2021.

Yousaf was given a 13-and-a-half-year extended prison sentence, made up to a 10-and-a-half-year custodial term and a three-year extended licence period.

He must serve two-thirds of the custodial term in prison before being considered for release by the parole board.

The judge said: "That was true at the trial and the position has not changed.

Having heard the trial, I consider your attitude to be one of arrogance and entitlement.

There is, in my judgement, a very real and very significant risk that you will behave in the same way towards other women.

If that happens, it will inevitably cause serious harm.

At the moment, there is no sign you will address the underlying issues that led to this offending."
