PETER HARDING OF EASTLEIGH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGERS AT CHANDLER’S FORD THEATRE

A man identified as Peter Harding, aged 75, residing on Merrieleas Drive in Chandler’s Ford, has been sentenced to six years in prison after admitting to multiple sexual offences committed against four teenage boys. The offences are classified as non-recent, meaning they occurred several years ago, but only came to light recently through police investigations.

Harding appeared in court on Tuesday, 11 March, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault and two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor. The court proceedings took place at Southampton Crown Court, and the sentencing was finalized on Friday, 16 May. The judge handed down the six-year jail term, reflecting the severity of the crimes and the breach of trust involved.

The incidents in question occurred between 2006 and 2012, during which Harding served as the director of the Centrestage Productions Youth Theatre located in Chandler’s Ford. The court was informed that some of the assaults happened within the theatre premises, specifically when Harding was fitting costumes for the young boys involved. These acts exploited his position of authority and trust within the youth theatre environment.

Additional allegations revealed that some of the sexual misconduct took place at Harding’s residence. The court heard that his position at the theatre ended following an internal investigation into his activities, which uncovered that Harding had downloaded indecent images of children. This investigation led to a criminal conviction in 2015, further tarnishing his reputation and raising questions about his conduct.

The sexual offences were first reported to the police in 2021, prompting a thorough investigation by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s specialist unit, Operation Marmion. This team is tasked with examining allegations of historical sexual abuse, particularly those involving institutions or individuals of prominence. The case against Harding highlights the importance of addressing past abuses and ensuring justice for victims, regardless of the time elapsed since the offences occurred.
