NELSON MAN CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER IN BRUTAL AXE ATTACK
Mohammad Malik, a 58-year-old man with no fixed address, was involved in a violent assault in Nelson on 4 July 2021, where he attacked Ishrat Ahmed and her husband Afaq with an axe.During the attack, Ishrat Ahmed suffered severe head injuries and later died in hospital, while her husband sustained serious brain injuries but recovered.
Malik was arrested shortly afterward, and the axe used was found hidden in his back garden.
While the jury cleared him of murder, he was convicted of manslaughter for killing Mrs.
Ahmed.
He was also cleared of attempted murder of Mr.
Ahmed but admitted to wounding them without intent.
Malik was not given a fixed address, and he is awaiting sentencing scheduled for 11 February.
Police described the attack as 'the most brutal fashion,' with Malik having launched 'an attack of unsparing violence' on the couple using a weapon he brought to their home.
