RUGBY TRAIN ENGINEER JAILED FOR ABUSE IMAGES FEATURING INFANTS

A man from Rugby involved in possessing child abuse images has been sentenced to prison.

He had digital files including printouts of children as young as five being sexually abused, along with indecent images of even younger children on his computer.

A judge at Warwick Crown Court dismissed arguments that his sentence could be suspended, citing his prior conviction for downloading child pornography.

Matthew Holland, aged 44 from Cambridge Street, was sentenced to 22 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years after admitting four counts of possessing indecent images of children.

Prosecutor Amy Jackson explained that police investigations revealed Holland’s computer had been used to download unlawful material in April.

During a search of his residence, officers discovered an envelope containing 16 printed images of children, five of which were classified as the most severe category A.

In addition, over 500 more images, some depicting infants and toddlers, were recovered from his digital devices.

Holland, who previously served a 40-week sentence in 2011 for similar offences, claimed the printed images were found while clearing out a relative’s loft and denied involvement with the images on his computer.

He acknowledged possessing the prints but said he had found them some years earlier.

During legal proceedings, his defense argued that given his past conviction, an immediate custodial sentence might not be appropriate.

The lawyer suggested that without intervention from the probation service, Holland’s dangerous urges might not be addressable and that a prison sentence might not effectively reduce his risk of re-offence.

The defense also proposed that a sex offender treatment program could help him develop strategies to prevent future offending.

However, Judge Stephen Eyre QC emphasized the severity of the images, which included very young children, babies, and children aged between two and six.

He stated that such offenses are not victimless, as the young children depicted are forced to participate in abusive acts.

The judge noted the aggravating factors: Holland’s previous conviction, the volume of images, and the ages of the children involved.

He concluded that because Holland actively engaged in this offending, a custodial sentence was necessary, despite his prior conviction.
