RUGBY DOG STARVED TO DEATH BY OWNER GETS 12-WEEK SUSPENDED SENTENCE
Mother-of-two Shaw pleaded guilty to two animal welfare offences in relation to a one-year-old crossbreed named Roxy. She was prosecuted by the RSPCA, following an investigation which began after Shaw took the deceased dog to a vet.
Roxy was in an emaciated state with every bone visible through her skin.
Her nails were long and overgrown due to a lack of care and exercise.
The vet gave her a body condition score of 0 out of 9; x-rays showed she had no body fat or skeletal muscle.
The vet stated that the severity of her emaciation suggests starvation as the most likely cause of death.
The report indicated that Roxy likely lost approximately 40% of her body weight over a span of around eight to nine weeks due to starvation.
The overgrown claws and loose collar further indicated severe neglect.
RSPCA Inspector Nicola Johnson highlighted that Roxy lost her life because of her owner's disregard for her welfare, noting that animals feel pain and suffering just like humans and deserve kindness and compassion.
