CUMNOCK MAN MARTIN LAIRD AWAITS SENTENCING FOR DOMESTIC ASSAULT AND POLICE OFFICER ATTACK
A Cumnock man is awaiting sentence after smashing his girlfriend’s head against a wall before trying to headbutt a police officer.Martin Laird was found guilty of carrying out the attack at a property in the town’s Holmburn Place earlier this year.
The 37-year-old, of Drumbrochan Road, was convicted of the March 27 attack following a trial at Ayr Sheriff Court.
He pulled the woman by her hair and was also found to have grabbed her by the throat in the incident.
Laird then repeatedly struck the woman’s head against a wall, leaving her injured.
Court papers state that Laird’s offence is regarded as more serious in the eyes of the law because it involved abuse of a partner or ex-partner.
Laird was also found to have assaulted a police officer during the course of his duty on the same date at Kilmarnock Police Station by attempting to headbutt them.
When Laird returned to court last week [Thursday, July 21], sentence was deferred for several weeks to await the outcome of a compensation order assessment.
Bail was continued and Laird will learn his fate on a later date.
