DUNFERMLINE COUPLE MANDY HUNTER AND TONY PATON ABANDON DOG ROCCO IN HORRIFIC CONDITION

Mandy Hunter and Tony Paton, both residents of Macbeth Road in Dunfermline, faced serious allegations after their dog, Rocco, was found suffering from severe neglect and untreated injuries.

The incident came to light when the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) received a distress report concerning the condition of Rocco, prompting an investigation into the welfare of the animal.

According to court records, Hunter and Paton admitted to causing their pet unnecessary suffering during the period from July 15 to September 2, 2016.

The depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf detailed the extent of Rocco’s suffering, describing the dog’s condition as dire and neglected for an extended period.

The SSPCA’s findings revealed that Rocco was suffering from a painful ear infection that had gone untreated, leading to the development of a large, open wound on the side of his face.

The wound was so severe that the dog’s jaw was exposed, indicating a significant level of neglect and infection.

It was reported that Tony Paton claimed the dog had been taken to a veterinarian at the end of August 2016.

However, despite this visit, the vet advised that Rocco should be euthanized due to his critical condition.

Instead of following this advice, Hunter and Paton failed to seek further treatment or provide adequate care.

The depute described the dog’s condition as having a “gaping and weeping hole” on the side of his face, a clear sign of the extent of his suffering.

Following the discovery, Rocco was removed from the couple’s residence.

The authorities also noted that Rocco’s weight was significantly below the healthy range, weighing only 24.8 kilograms when he should have been between 30 and 35 kilograms.

Additionally, the dog was suffering from a flea infestation and hair loss, further indicating neglect and poor living conditions.

Due to the severity of Rocco’s injuries and overall health, the decision was made to euthanize him.

The SSPCA’s investigation also uncovered that other animals, including a dog, rabbits, and frogs, were present in the household, raising concerns about the overall animal welfare standards maintained by Hunter and Paton.

In court, the couple’s legal representatives opposed a motion to ban them from keeping animals for two years, and this request was ultimately denied.

The court did not specify the exact sentence but highlighted the gravity of the neglect and suffering inflicted upon Rocco.

The case drew significant attention to animal cruelty issues in Dunfermline and underscored the importance of animal welfare enforcement in the region.
