JAMES STUTTERED
A former teacher and Scout leader from Rugby, Stuttard avoided imprisonment despite having downloaded hundreds of inappropriate pictures depicting young boys.
He has been on remand since January, mostly due to concerns that he might flee the country after a job application abroad.
Prior to his arrest, Stuttard taught at Spratton Hall, a private school near Northampton.
He pleaded guilty to three charges related to producing indecent images of minors.
His sentence consists of eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months, alongside 30 days of rehabilitation activities, and he is required to complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
The former Scout leader, known for promoting the 'fitness activity badge' for Beaver Scouts, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade.
Furthermore, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order is in place for seven years, prohibiting him from engaging in any paid or voluntary work involving contact with children.
Prosecutor Jason Pegg highlighted that Stuttard, who also volunteers as a Scout leader, was generally considered to have a good character.
However, suspicions about his computer use prompted authorities to visit his home.
During the visit, Stuttard admitted that both a desktop computer and a laptop, which contained images of children, were present.
He was taken into custody, cautioned, and refused to answer questions but provided police with his passwords.
Authorities examined his devices, including two Apple laptops, a tablet, an SD card, and a USB stick.
The investigation revealed images predominantly of boys aged 10 to 12, including 10 category A images of boys in penetrative sex acts, along with numerous deleted but retrievable images.
Additional images included 50 category B pictures of children involved in non-penetrative acts, and 139 images plus 549 inaccessible images in category C showing boys in nude or suggestive poses.
His defense lawyer noted that Stuttard had been detained since January 5, which amounted to a sentence of six and a half months, justified by fears he would flee the country.
Judge Richard Griffith-Jones acknowledged his good character but expressed regret, stating, “It is a tragedy because he would have been a very good teacher.” The judge also noted that Stuttard hails from a respectable family and overcame significant difficulties, including profound dyslexia, to achieve academic and professional success.
His role at Spratton Hall School brought him considerable stress and personal struggles, especially after a close friend's suicide in 2014, which led to destructive behaviors and viewing of illicit images.
The court recognized that Stuttard had some sexual attraction to boys of his age and gender, but he found prison environments particularly harsh.
The sentencing guideline for his offense was initially 12 months, reduced to eight due to his guilty plea, and his time already served was six and a half months.
The judge emphasized that although his feelings could not be helped, his actions had effectively ended his professional career.
He was advised that he has talents but must redirect them toward lawful purposes, and because of his time in custody, no further imprisonment is deemed necessary.
