HENRY CHRISTIE FROM HUNTINGDON AND WEST KIRBY JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING CHILDREN

In June 1998, Henry Christie, an 81-year-old former carer, was sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of multiple sexual offences committed during his time as a house parent at a children’s home.

The court heard that Christie had engaged in indecent assaults on two boys and three girls, with the crimes spanning from 1973 to 1981.

The victims, who ranged in age from eight to thirteen years old, were residents at the West Kirby Residential School during the period when the abuse occurred.

Throughout the hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, Christie displayed no visible emotion as the judge, Ann Downey, delivered her verdict.

She emphasized the gravity of his breach of trust, stating that all the victims had been particularly vulnerable children living away from their families.

Judge Downey pointed out that Christie, in his role as a trusted adult, had seriously violated that trust, leaving lasting emotional scars on those he abused.

She remarked, “You seriously breached that trust and it was plain while they were giving evidence that your behaviour towards them has left its mark on them.” In her sentencing, Judge Downey acknowledged Christie’s advanced age, which she considered a mitigating factor, and reduced what would otherwise have been a more severe penalty.

She ordered that Christie register as a sex offender under the Sex Offenders’ Act for a period of ten years.

During the proceedings, some of Christie’s victims, now adults, attended the court to give evidence.

It was also revealed that Christie had a prior conviction from 1991 at Peterborough Crown Court for sexually abusing a seven-year-old girl.

Although two similar offences were left on file, he received a nine-month suspended sentence for that case.

Prosecutor William Waldron, QC, informed the court that Christie, a widower residing on Russett Avenue in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, was still facing nine additional charges related to alleged abuse of three young sisters in Wirral approximately thirty years ago.

However, the court decided to leave these charges on file, citing the prosecution’s view that pursuing them was not in the public interest due to Christie’s age.

Christie’s 11-day trial revealed that some of the offences took place at the children’s home, while others occurred during visits to the cinema and swimming baths.

Christie, who was living in Hoylake with his wife at the time of the offences, denied all allegations.

Initially, the case included four additional counts of indecent assault on another girl and boy, but these were ultimately dismissed, and he was cleared of those charges.

His defense, led by QC Malcolm Stewart, argued that the offences were not as severe as some others that come before the courts.

Stewart pointed out that Christie, who served in the Royal Air Force for 24 years, had since changed his lifestyle and had not come into contact with young children since his 1991 conviction, which had served as a wake-up call for him.

The defense also highlighted that the risk of re-offending diminishes with age, noting Christie’s current age of 81.

Stewart added, “Despite the terrible wrongs he did at the home, he appeared to have benefited others there.”
