HAWICK MAN CAUGHT ATTACKING DOG ON NEW YEAR DAY
A shocking act of alleged animal cruelty has ignited outrage across the Scottish Borders after an innocent dog was caught on CCTV being assaulted less than one minute into the New Year of 2026.At 25 seconds past midnight on 1 January 2026, Hawick’s public livestream CCTV captured two individuals walking along Hawick high street.
What happens next has left viewers horrified.
The footage shows a man at the front of the group stomping his feet, shouting at a dog, and striking the animal, as it walks beside him on Bourtree Place, close to the Horse Statue.
The dog, later identified as Bella, a four-year-old mixed setter, can be seen cowering in clear distress.
The man is identified as 44-year-old Gordon Willis, wearing a black jacket, denim jeans and a distinctive purple backpack.
Walking behind him is his partner, 32-year-old JJ Turner, who continues on as the dog recoils.
Moments later, she appears to notice the CCTV camera and attempts to cover her face.
The footage spread rapidly online, sparking widespread anger and demands for immediate action.
Despite the video evidence, Police Scotland have confirmed that they are not progressing an investigation, instead passing the matter to the Scottish SPCA.
The SSPCA have also confirmed that they are no longer investigating, stating that because the dog was removed from the individuals’ care the same day, evidential difficulties prevent further action.
That decision has stunned many who viewed the footage.
Following what has been described as institutional inaction, Red Rose UK launched a private investigation, identifying those responsible as Gordon Willis and JJ Turner.
It is reported the pair moved from Livingston to the quiet Borders town less than three years ago and are currently residing at the Wellfield Road flats, opposite Wilton Primary School.
Bella was removed from their care on the same day the incident occurred.
What should have been a moment of celebration at the start of a new year has instead become a symbol of anger, disbelief, and unanswered questions.
