SOLIHULL TENNIS COACH CLAIRE LYTE SENTENCED FOR SEX ABUSE IN MERSEYSIDE

In a case that has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about trust and misconduct within youth sports, Claire Lyte, a 29-year-old tennis coach from Solihull, West Midlands, was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for sexually abusing a young girl from Merseyside.

Lyte's conviction followed a two-week trial at Liverpool Crown Court, where the court heard harrowing details of her inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old girl.

The court was told that the victim's mother discovered her daughter and Lyte in bed together, an incident that brought the misconduct to light and ultimately led to Lyte's arrest and prosecution.

Throughout the proceedings, the judge, Nigel Gilmour, was highly critical of Lyte’s attempts to deny the allegations.

He condemned her for lying in an effort to avoid conviction, highlighting her dishonesty during the trial.

The court also learned that Lyte had previously been warned by her employers at the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) for her conduct with young players she coached.

These warnings, one of which was issued just days before the incident was uncovered, were considered aggravating factors in her sentencing.

Lyte faced four counts of sexual activity with a child, charges she denied.

Despite her denial, the jury found her guilty based on the evidence presented, which included intimate text messages exchanged between her and the girl.

The court also heard that Lyte had developed a relationship with the girl after they met at a national tennis academy at Loughborough University.

During tournaments, Lyte even shared a room with her young charge, further breaching the boundaries of her professional role.

Judge Gilmour emphasized the betrayal of trust involved in the case.

He stated, “The girl’s family expected you to look after her and she was entrusted in your care.

You corrupted that girl and advanced her experiences of sexual matters by some years.

You welcomed her attention and encouraged it and then manipulated what had become her infatuation with you for your own selfish sexual ends.” In addition to her prison sentence, Lyte was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register and was banned from working with children in the future.

The case drew attention to the dangers of abuse hidden behind roles of authority, especially in sports where young athletes are vulnerable.

Detective Inspector Dave Grisenthwaite of Merseyside Police described the case as “particularly disturbing,” noting that Lyte exploited her position as a tennis coach to betray the confidence placed in her by the LTA, the girl, and her family.

He underscored the importance of safeguarding measures to prevent such breaches of trust.

Lyte’s legal representative, Margaret Coal, announced that her client plans to appeal the verdict.

She stated, “Ms Lyte is devastated with the guilty verdict.

She has maintained her innocence throughout these proceedings and continues to do so.

I can confirm we are going to lodge an appeal against her conviction.”
