SOLIHULL WOMAN JAILED FOR THROWING COLD DRINK AT HER DAUGHTER
On July 15, Sandra Webb, 68 years old, was involved in an incident where she threw a cold drink at her daughter.Webb, who in 2023 had already been given a suspended prison sentence for threatening her adult daughter with a knife at their home in Smith's Wood, Solihull, admitted to committing assault by beating.
The court was told that the incident occurred inside her family residence, and she was remanded to HMP Foston Hall in Derbyshire because of her previous conviction.
During her sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court, Judge Peter Cooke described the case as 'troubling.' He explained, 'This was the most minor form of assault, charged as battery, relating to the act of throwing that drink.
It was not hot, nor did it involve any scalding.' She was fined £100 and released immediately, with the judge commenting, 'It’s unnecessary to keep a lady of any age, particularly 68, behind bars longer than required.
Mrs.
Webb, you are going home.' Webb appeared via video link from prison and expressed emotion as she said 'thank you.' The judge also discussed her ongoing struggle with alcohol, noting she kept lager upstairs for sneaky drinking.
He warned her to do her best to cut down on alcohol consumption, to which Webb responded, 'I'm stopping drinking.
I managed to quit cigarettes, and I can do the same with alcohol.' The judge emphasized that the incident was 'grossly overreacted' and cited her lack of prior offenses along with potential mental health issues as reasons for not imposing further imprisonment.
