CHRISTOPHER RODGERS HAWICK TWEEDBANK DISTURBANCES LEAVE WOMAN IN FEAR
In a disturbing series of events, Christopher Rodgers, a 22-year-old resident of Eildon Road in Hawick, was sentenced to four months in jail following his reckless and aggressive behavior towards a woman living in Tweedbank. The incidents occurred over a span of just 24 hours, during which Rodgers repeatedly visited her home in Jura Drive while intoxicated, causing significant distress and fear.
On September 28, Rodgers first arrived at the woman's residence in a drunken state.
The situation escalated when he physically assaulted her by slapping her on the body.
In addition to the assault, he spat on her leg after she attempted to remove his Vodka bottle from her home by pouring its contents down the sink.
This act of violence and disrespect marked a troubling start to the series of disturbances.
The very next night, Rodgers returned to her home, again visibly intoxicated.
His behavior was not only disruptive but also verbally abusive, further intimidating the woman and causing her considerable alarm.
His repeated visits and aggressive conduct demonstrated a blatant disregard for her safety and well-being.
Sheriff Peter Paterson presided over the case at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.
During the proceedings, he expressed his disappointment with Rodgers' actions, emphasizing that the court had no choice but to impose a custodial sentence.
The sheriff pointed out that Rodgers had been warned multiple times about his conduct but chose to ignore those warnings, instead opting to get drunk and behave in what he described as an “abominable fashion”.
Incident 2: A 28-YEAR-OLD who carried out a “despicable” unprovoked attack on an elderly holidaymaker in Melrose’s High Street has been jailed for four months at Selkirk Sheriff Court.
Christopher Rodgers pleaded guilty to assaulting the 74-year-old man by causing him to fall to the ground and repeatedly attempting to punch him and then repeatedly kick him on the body while lying on the ground on the afternoon of February 27.
Zoe Tranter, prosecuting, told the court that the tourist was staying locally and had been having a coffee in the High Street.
She explained that he walked past a bench near the Kings Arms Hotel when he was approached by Rodgers and another man.
Ms Tranter said Rodgers grabbed the man by the jacket causing a rip on the side of it.
The pensioner tried to pull away from Rodgers but fell to the ground where the accused tried to punch him several times and was then seen kicking his victim on the body.
Police officers arrived at around 3.30pm and traced Rodgers and another man who were “highly intoxicated.” Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said: “It is an unpleasant incident and does not reflect well on him.
“He has shown appropriate remorse in the social work report.” Sheriff Kevin McCarron told Rodgers, formerly of Earlston and now living at Eildon Road in Hawick, that he had 24 previous convictions.
He added: “You have assaulted a 74-year-old man.
It was entirely unprovoked.
He was here on his holidays.
“This is a despicable crime and I see no alternative but to mark it by custody.” The sheriff said he would have jailed Rodgers for six months but reduced it to four months due to the guilty plea.
