CHARLES PEARCE'S SHOCKING ABUSE IN PETERBOROUGH AND WALTHAMSTOW REVEALED

On November 2, 1992, a disturbing case involving Charles Pearce, a 71-year-old man with a troubling history, came to light during a court hearing at London's Snaresbrook Crown Court. Pearce, who had been residing in Walthamstow, East London, was found to have committed heinous acts of sexual abuse against teenage schoolgirls, acts that spanned over a period from October 1990 to June of the following year.

Police had executed a raid on Pearce's flat in Walthamstow, uncovering a cache of incriminating evidence in his kitchen. Among the items seized were pornographic magazines, photographs depicting young girls, and vibrators. During police interviews, Pearce admitted to the detectives that he believed his actions, which he described as 'enlightening' the girls, were not wrong. This disturbing statement highlighted his twisted perception of his misconduct.

It was later revealed that Pearce, who had moved to Wesleyan Road in Peterborough, pleaded guilty to six counts of indecent assault and one charge of indecency with a girl under the age of 14. The victims were five schoolgirls aged between 12 and 17, and the abuse occurred over a period of nearly two years, from October 1990 to June 1992.

In October of the previous year, Judge Alan Hitching had adjourned the case to allow for reports to be prepared and for Pearce to undergo assessment for suitability on a sex offenders' scheme. During the sentencing, Judge Hitching warned Pearce that as a 'Rule 43' prisoner, he would be in contact with rapists and child abusers, and there was a significant risk that he might reoffend upon release. The judge emphasized that addressing Pearce's issues outside of prison might serve the greater public good.

Consequently, Pearce was sentenced to a three-year probation period, with the condition that he attend a sex offenders' group managed by the Peterborough probation service. The judge also issued a stern warning, noting Pearce's advanced age, that if he continued to commit similar offenses, he could face life imprisonment.

Further details of Pearce's misconduct emerged from testimonies and statements. It was reported that towards the end of 1990, Pearce was living just a few hundred yards from an all-girls school. He had developed a troubling rapport with some of the students, often hosting them at his residence, offering them soft drinks, crisps, and cigarettes. Prosecutor Mr. Robert Colover explained that some of the girls recalled Pearce showing them sex magazines and, on occasion, vibrators. This behavior escalated into a pattern where he would touch the girls or persuade them to pose on his bed, with some instances involving oral sex, touching his private parts, and even public masturbation. Pearce also exchanged money with the girls, further complicating the case.

Two of the teenage victims provided statements to the court, recounting how Pearce had instructed them to get onto his bed and 'act like lesbians.'

On June 19 of the previous year, the deputy head of the school observed three girls leaving Pearce's flat and promptly contacted the police. The following day, law enforcement officers executed a search of Pearce's residence, uncovering a disturbing collection of evidence, including pornographic magazines, photographs of young girls, a camera, and a used condom tied in a knot behind his bed. Police also found three large vibrators in his kitchen.

During police interviews, Pearce admitted to the allegations, claiming that he believed his actions were 'enlightening' and that he did not think they were wrong. Additionally, he wrote a letter to the school instructing teachers not to be harsh on the girls, describing them as naive and 'like putty in my hand.' He confessed to taking advantage of their ignorance, expressing shame for his conduct.

It was also revealed that Pearce had a prior conviction for indecency with a teenage girl in 1989, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior. The court's proceedings and evidence painted a disturbing picture of a man who exploited his position and trust to commit serious sexual offenses against vulnerable young girls, both in Walthamstow and Peterborough.
