CATHAL KELLY CONVICTED OF RAPE IN EDINBURGH: A SHOCKING CRIME IN FERNIEHILL
A 30-year-old man named Cathal Kelly, who was employed as a Project Manager at a software company, has been found guilty of committing a serious sexual assault during a weekend trip to Edinburgh.The incident occurred in November 2019 within a residential property located in the Ferniehill area of Edinburgh. According to court proceedings, Kelly targeted a woman who was sleeping at the time, removing her nightclothes without her consent and subsequently raping her while she was unable to resist or give permission. The assault was described as a calculated and heinous act, leaving a lasting impact on the victim.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard detailed testimonies about the events, revealing that Kelly returned to his hometown of Athenry, Galway, shortly after the assault. Unbeknownst to him, the victim had contacted Police Scotland to report the incident, initiating a police investigation.
Kelly’s arrest came after he flew back to the United Kingdom. He was detained at London airport while attempting to visit a friend, which led to his detention and subsequent questioning. During police interviews, Kelly initially denied any involvement, claiming he only became aware of the allegations when he was detained. His defense team argued that the evidence presented was insufficient to secure a conviction, but the jury ultimately disagreed.
Following a trial overseen by Lord Richardson, the jury found Kelly guilty of the charge of rape. The court proceedings concluded with Kelly being remanded in custody, with sentencing scheduled for June 14, 2023. The presiding judge emphasized the gravity of the offence, noting that Kelly had committed a serious sexual crime. A Criminal Justice Social Work Report was ordered to assist in determining an appropriate sentence.
