—————————————————————————————————— SENTENCING UPDATE —————————————————————————————————— A Scots sex offender who used online gaming to target vulnerable schoolboys has been jailed after a catalogue of disturbing abuse came to light.
Declan Stoddart, 22, posed as a friend to boys aged just 11 and 12 through the gaming platform Xbox before steering conversations onto social media, where his behaviour escalated into explicit and manipulative exchanges.
Prosecutors told the court that Stoddart sent graphic sexual material to children, including extreme and disturbing videos.
He also transmitted footage of himself self-harming and threatened to take his own life if the boys reported him, placing emotional pressure on his victims to remain silent.
The abuse was uncovered when concerned parents examined their children's devices and alerted Police Scotland.
Officers traced the communications back to Stoddart's address in Edinburgh, where he was arrested.
Even after being released on bail, Stoddart continued attempting to contact what he believed were underage girls online.
In reality, he was communicating with adult vigilantes.
The confrontation that followed at his property led to public disorder, with damage reported to the building.
When police later examined his phone, further indecent material was discovered.
At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on 17 February 2026, Stoddart admitted eight charges.
He was sentenced to 39 months in prison and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
The court also imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and indefinite non-harassment orders protecting the victims.
Scottish Ministers were notified to ensure he is formally barred from regulated work involving young people.
