IPSWICH MAN CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CUSTODY
An Ipswich resident accused of sexually assaulting two schoolgirls has been warned that he could face a lengthy prison term.Adriaan Spenkelink was found guilty last week of multiple child sex offences, including attempted rape, following a court trial.
The sentencing was postponed until September 7 to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
During the hearing, Judge David Wilson remanded Spenkelink into custody and indicated that he is likely to receive a substantial custodial sentence.
The judge also ordered Spenkelink, aged 40 and residing on Bulwer Road in Ipswich, to register as a sex offender on an interim basis.
Spenkelink denied two counts of attempted rape, causing or encouraging a girl to engage in sexual activity, and causing a child to watch adult pornography related to one of the victims.
He pleaded not guilty to two additional counts of sexual assault involving the other alleged victim.
The alleged offences occurred starting January 2020.
Spenkelink was convicted on all but one count of attempted rape.
Prosecutor Andrew Thompson told the court that Spenkelink did not attend his trial last Thursday; instead, he was found at his home in an incapacitated condition and was taken to hospital.
After being discharged on Friday afternoon, he was arrested and remanded in custody.
