LEICESTER RAPIST WAYNE PHILLIPS GETS AT LEAST 8 YEARS JAIL FOR ABDUCTION AND SEXUAL ASSAULT

An armed rapist, who posed as a Good Samaritan to abduct and carry out a terrifying sex attack upon a lone woman, has today been jailedWayne Phillips – who used to be known as Hobell – will have to serve at least eight years before being released.Leicester Crown Court was told he was only recently released from a 13-year jail sentence for similar offences, when he offered a 20-year-old woman a lift in the pouring rain.He then drove her against her will from Leicester city centre to a lay-by on the A6, in the Oadby area, where he bound her wrists and threatened her with a knife. The 46-year-old, who was homeless at the time, ignored her pleas to stop and forced her to have unprotected sex with him in his car, in the early hours of November 20 last year. Then he untied her, apologised and took her back to the city centre, said Gordon Aspden, prosecuting.Phillips, who admitted twice raping his latest victim, was only released from prison a few weeks after completing a sentence, imposed in 2004, for subjecting two young women to a sex attack in the Narborough Road area of Leicester. On that occasion he posed as a pizza deliveryman to storm into their home “like a raging bull” where he held them captive, bound and gagged, and indecently assaulted them.Sentencing him today, Judge Philip Head told Phillips: “You are extremely dangerous to women in every sense of that adjective.“You were equipped with tape and weapons, it was no coincidence you were out in your car in the early hours, offering a lift to an apparently lost and vulnerable female.”He said the prolonged offending involved abduction, threats of violence, the possession of a weapon and the victim was subjected to degradation.Judge Head said: “It’s had a large psychological impact upon her, even a year on.“She described it as having a ‘truly unbearable’ daily impact with daily anxiety and being petrified – and is particularly fearful in the dark.”Mr Aspden told the court that the victim had been in a distressed state, having had a row with her boyfriend, and was trying to find her car in the city centre, to sleep in the vehicle, but ended up lost.He said: “The defendant offered her a lift, pointing out that it was freezing cold and raining.“Initially she said no, but he persisted and she changed her mind and got into the front passenger seat of his black Ford Ka.”When she realised she was being driven in the wrong direction and asked where they were going, the defendant put his arm around her neck, pressed “something sharp” against her and said “Don’t ******* move” and “Don’t make me ******* hurt you.”Mr Aspden said: “Thereafter she was largely compliant.“He produced a roll of black tape which he used to tightly bind his victim’s wrist together.“The speed and efficiency with which he detained her suggested he’d done something similar before.“He pushed her head and body down, out of view, and when she said her back hurt, he told her he would tape her mouth up if she did not shut up.”After twice raping her, he untied her bonds, apologised and “bizarrely” offered to go to the police station – although he dropped her off in the city centre and headed out of Leicester. He was arrested later that day in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, and was found to have no insurance or driving licence.Black tape, a small retractable knife, a screwdriver and zip-ties were found in the car.Phillips falsely claimed the woman had consented to sex.His mobile phone revealed he had made internet searches about stalking and violent rape attacks as well as how to evade leaving DNA evidence.Mary Prior QC, in mitigation said: “He has expressed remorse (in the pre-sentence report).“He accepts he was aware she wasn’t consenting.“He began his life of criminality at the age of 12.“He’s just spent 13 years in custody.”She said that the defendant, in his lifetime, had served a total of “about 27 years in one form of custody or another.”The barrister added that having been released from his last sentence, her client was not being supervised or assisted and was living rough in his car.“He had no accommodation and no skills because the world had moved on in his 13 year absence.”Shortly before the offence, he told his sister he was feeling down and wanted to go back into custody.
