ASYLUM SEEKER WHO RAPED VULNERABLE MAN IN PARK JAILED
A man seeking asylum who assaulted a vulnerable individual in a park has been sentenced to prison.Leicester Crown Court was informed that Islamuddin Talash assaulted a man who had fled his home and was approaching strangers in Abbey Park, Leicester, on the afternoon of October 9, 2023, in an attempt to buy a bicycle.
The court heard that Talash, a resident of Smethwick, lured the victim back to his hotel, claiming he had a bike to give him, then led him to a secluded part of the park where the attack occurred.
On Wednesday, Recorder Sacha Ackland sentenced the 43-year-old to six years in prison, deducting the time he has already spent in custody on remand, meaning he will serve no more than two-thirds of his sentence.
Ackland also informed Talash, an Afghan national, that he would face automatic deportation after completing his sentence.
Talash was found guilty of one count of rape after a trial held in June, during which it was revealed he had previously stood trial twice.
The court noted that the victim, who was 20 at the time, had never been to Leicester before and had conditions affecting his social interactions and ability to recognize danger.
In delivering the sentence, Ackland stated that the victim was "in need of assistance" and had "naively decided to trust you." The court described how Talash took the victim to a part of the park known for sexual activity, where used condoms were found on the ground.
The judge said Talash directed the victim to perform oral sex on him, which he did reluctantly despite not wanting to.
Ackland explained that the victim chose the "path of least resistance," not realizing "you would do further."
