NOTTINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR STREET ROBBERY OF 76-YEAR-OLD
A 20-year-old man, Vasile Marcuta, of no fixed address, was involved in the street robbery of a 76-year-old pensioner on July 17.
He pushed the victim onto his hands and knees and stole his wallet containing £90 and bank cards.
The victim suffered a minor graze to his knee.
Marcuta was arrested after the police recovered his cap, which he handed over.
DNA evidence linked him to the crime.
During sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 12 months in custody, with the judge mentioning that he would serve half before being released on licence.
The judge noted: "This is street robbery of a 76-year-old man.
CCTV shows you in the area for ten minutes, and I have no doubt you were looking for someone to rob, waiting for someone who was likely to offer the minimum resistance." The court also heard Marcuta's explanation that he committed the offence to buy food for his nephew, citing his difficult financial circumstances.
He also admitted to the offence and expressed remorse.
