OBSESSION TURNS TO STALKING AS MAN PUTS TRACKER ON WOMAN'S CAR AND APPLIES FOR HER JOB

An "obsessed" stalker put a tracker on a woman's car and even applied for a job at her workplace.

Tyrell Brown, 28, of Tenter Close, Top Valley, pleaded guilty to stalking her by following and tracking her between March 17, 2022, and April 22, 2022.

Nottingham Crown Court heard the woman discovered the tracker fixed with strong tape under the bumper of her car.

It followed a course of terrifying conduct from Brown, where he had turned up at her work and home address and contacted her.

"You even applied for a job at her workplace," said Judge Steven Coupland, who sentenced Brown at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, May 31.

"More serious than that, she found you had put a tracker on her car." "You described yourself in interview as being 'obsessed with her.

That is a fair description." And he said anyone guilty of stalking commits a very serious offence.

"Serious, because the effects are corrosive," he added.

Referring to the sentencing guidelines, he said Brown's offending was in category B - it was persistent over a long period, caused some distress and, he used different means to harass her.

But the judge also looked at the mitigating features in the case, bearing in mind Brown is now 28 and there is nothing similar on his criminal record.

References from friends, family and past employers spoke highly of Brown and each of them described being shocked at the description of what he had done.

He maintains the support of his family and has somewhere to live.

"I bear in mind you have been remanded into custody for about a month," added Judge Coupland, who addressed Brown over a live link from Brown's current residence in prison.

He noted that Brown had pleaded guilty and he had plainly crossed the point where custody had to be the starting point.

Taking into account his age, his admissions, his plea, the time spent in custody, and with the support of his family, "it seems to me the balance is just in favour of suspending the inevitable sentence," added the judge.

Six months in prison was imposed but suspended for two years - meaning Brown has to stay out of trouble for that period.

Unpaid work was added to the punishment for 150 hours, 40 rehabilitation activity days, and to go on a course to address his behaviour.

A restraining order was made not to contact the victim, go to an address or her workplace.
