TRACY DAWSON AND ROBERT SMITH FROM NOTTINGHAM STARVE PET DOG BRUCE
In a disturbing case that shocked the Nottingham community, Tracy Jane Dawson, born on June 10, 1972, and her son Robert Scott Smith, born on July 29, 1993, were found guilty of neglecting their pet dog, Bruce, to the point of severe starvation. The incident came to light after RSPCA inspectors responded to reports of an animal in a dire condition at a residence in Nottingham.
Tracy Dawson, who was notably morbidly obese at the time, residing at 281 Broxtowe Lane, Aspley, Nottingham NG8 5NE, and her son Robert, of 1 Chetwin Road, Bilborough, Nottingham NG8 4HU, were both implicated in the neglect.
The inspectors discovered that Bruce, a crossbreed dog, had been left to suffer without adequate food for at least six weeks.
The neglect was so severe that the dog’s ribs were clearly visible, a stark indicator of extreme malnutrition.
Veterinary assessments confirmed the severity of Bruce’s condition.
The dog was described as being extremely thin, with a sunken face, and was rated with a body score of just 0.5 out of five—where one signifies emaciation.
This score indicated that Bruce was severely underweight, essentially skin and bones, due to a prolonged period of starvation and lack of proper nutrition.
According to prosecutor Paul Wright, the incident was reported on March 2, 2015, when authorities received information about a dog in a poor state at a Nottingham residence.
RSPCA inspectors promptly attended the scene and spoke with Tracy Dawson.
During the investigation, both Dawson and her son Robert were interviewed voluntarily.
Both admitted that there was an issue with the dog’s condition, acknowledging that Bruce had been neglected.
Following the rescue, Bruce was taken into the care of the RSPCA, who provided him with necessary medical treatment and care to restore his health.
Thanks to the efforts of the animal welfare organization, Bruce was eventually rehabilitated and returned to full health.
In court, the defendants faced sentencing for their actions.
Tracy Dawson and Robert Smith received a 12-month community order, which included 100 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, they were ordered to pay costs of £500 each.
As part of the court’s ruling, both were banned from keeping any animals for a period of five years.
This ban, which was set to expire in July 2020, was intended to prevent any future neglect or abuse of animals by the pair.
