TEENAGER TOOK DRUGS IN FRONT OF BABY AND NEGLECTED THEM, COURT HEARS
A teenage girl has been ordered to attend sessions with alcohol and substance misuse services and placed under supervision for 18 months after admitting to neglecting a young child in her care by allowing the child to be around drug paraphernalia and consuming alcohol and drugs in the child's presence.Teagan Wilson, aged 18, previously 19 at the time of her initial court appearance, pleaded guilty to charges under Section 12 of the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937 during a hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court earlier this year.
The incidents occurred at her home in Prestonpans, between November 2025 and March 2026, where she was caring for a baby estimated to be between 12 and 16 months old.
Wilson admitted to multiple acts of neglect, including failing to bathe and dress the infant properly, leaving the child in wet or soiled clothing, and exposing the child to drug paraphernalia.
Witnesses reported seeing her smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol in front of the child, with one describing her as “extremely intoxicated” while caring for the baby.
She also fed the child milk that was unsafe to drink and was often intoxicated during her caregiving duties.
Authorities received reports of the neglect, leading to her arrest and subsequent charges.
Wilson had been granted bail on 26 February 2026, despite these offences.
She appeared again at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week for sentencing before Sheriff Charles Walls, where she was sentenced to a community payback order.
As part of her sentence, she will attend sessions with alcohol and substance misuse services and be subject to supervision by the local social services department for the next 18 months.
The court was informed that Wilson’s neglect included allowing the child to be around drug paraphernalia and consuming controlled drugs and alcohol in the child's presence.
The incidents spanned from November 2025 to March 2026, at her address in Prestonpans.
Sheriff Walls postponed the final sentencing to allow for social work assessments, which are scheduled for next month.
