—————————————————————————————————— SENTENCING UPDATE —————————————————————————————————— A 28-year-old man has been locked up for a brutal assault on a defenceless six-month-old baby at a home in Peebles.
Steven Dailly, who gave an address in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, was sentenced to three years in prison after a jury unanimously found him guilty at Selkirk Sheriff Court.
Police were called to a residential property in the Borders town on 11 November 2023 following reports of a seriously injured infant.
The court heard the baby had suffered repeated blunt force injuries to the head, with prosecutors stating the exact method used could not be determined.
Dailly attempted to excuse his actions by blaming alcohol and gave a series of conflicting explanations, first suggesting another child was responsible before later claiming the baby had fallen from a pram.
Passing sentence, Peter Paterson condemned the attack as a serious assault on an innocent child and highlighted the shifting accounts given by the offender.
In addition to the jail term, the court imposed a lifelong non-harassment order, banning Dailly from any contact with the child’s mother.
