FORMER FOOTBALL COACH STEPHEN TURTON JAILED IN SALFORD FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST YOUNG BOYS
In March 2019, a former junior football coach was sentenced to prison for sexually abusing young boys. Stephen Turton, aged 66, was given a sentence of 13 years and six months at Manchester Crown Court after admitting to multiple sexual offences involving two young victims.Turton, who coached a now-defunct under-11 team in Salford from the early 1990s, was described by Judge Suzanne Goddard as a "calculating and predatory paedophile" who exploited his coaching role to commit his crimes.
The court heard that Turton, of Castleton Close in Gamesley, Derbyshire, pleaded guilty to seven counts of indecency with a child, six counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. He had groomed and sexually abused one boy under the age of 11 in the early 1990s, in a converted van that served as the team’s minibus. Prosecutors revealed that Turton took photographs of the abuse, claiming he would sell the images and give the proceeds to the victim.
The assaults on the first victim continued until he was 13, after which he reportedly "went off the rails," turning to alcohol and drugs. The victim disclosed what had happened about five years ago to a friend, following a social media reunion of former players, police said.
Following Turton’s arrest, a second victim came forward. This individual was groomed and abused from age eight until 16.
As part of his sentence, Turton will be required to sign the sex offenders register for life.
Regarding the first victim, Turton pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault of a male, and one count of indecency with a child. Each of these counts involved multiple incidents spanning three years. He was acquitted after a trial of one count of rape and two counts of aiding and abetting rape.
For the second victim, Turton admitted guilt to three counts of indecency with a child under 14, three counts of indecency with a child under 16, three counts of indecent assault on a male, and two counts of sexual assault, with these counts also involving numerous incidents over the years.
