MAN HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 11 YEARS AFTER BEING JAILED FOR AN ASSAULT ON A WOMAN

A Castleford man has been sent to prison after CCTV footage showed him attempting to hang his partner using a noose.

Stefan Carr, age 28, was recorded lifting his partner, Bethany Marchant, 24, off the ground by her neck as he used a makeshift noose made from a rope.

The violent incident took place during a three-hour assault on May 5, where Carr repeatedly tried to suffocate his partner over several hours, leaving her with around 50 bruises.

Carr, who has a prior record of domestic violence against women, pleaded guilty to the charges.

He was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court to 11 years and three months in prison for four counts of assault and one count of attempted assault.

Two of the charges concerned previous assaults on his former partner, who ended their relationship in April of the previous year.

In late 2018, believing she was with someone new, Carr punched his ex-partner in the face, and in January 2019, he attempted to suffocate her once more.

The remaining charges related to the attack on Ms Marchant on May 5, while Carr was still out on bail for his earlier assault on another woman, whose identity remains undisclosed.

The incident happened after the couple had an argument while returning home from an evening out.

Ms Marchant managed to persuade Carr to take her to hospital, but he then threatened to drive their vehicle into a reservoir, putting both of their lives in danger.

She managed to escape, prompting neighbours to call the police, who arrested Carr.

In her statement to the court, Ms Marchant shared how she cannot sleep with pillows anymore and has been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder since the attack.

Judge Penelope Belcher stated: “You know where she lives, and she believed you might come to harm or kill her.

You also threatened her son, and she cannot bear the thought of him being hurt.

She has lost trust and confidence in others because of what you did.” Following the sentencing, Ms Marchant expressed relief that Carr was imprisoned.

“I just hope he has remorse for what he has done and that he gets the help that he needs to sort himself out and to not hurt anybody else,” she said.

She hopes speaking out about her ordeal will encourage other victims of domestic violence to come forward.

“If you are a victim of domestic abuse or violence then come forward and lock these people away before they do further damage to other people,” Ms Marchant said.

“It is really, really difficult.

Day to day it is really hard to keep getting up and being a mum and a teacher.

“But I have to do it.

If it helps another person then I have done myself proud and I have done my family proud.”
