SUNDERLAND MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE IN CHILD GROOMING INVESTIGATION
A young man named Spencer Andrew Barella, aged 20 from the Silksworth area in Sunderland, has been formally charged with the crime of rape as part of an ongoing investigation into child grooming and exploitation.The case is linked to Operation Sanctuary, an initiative launched by Northumbria Police in January 2014 to combat child sexual abuse.
Barella appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Saturday, April 5, where he was granted bail and set to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on April 17.
This individual is the 11th person to be charged under Operation Sanctuary, which came after reports raised concerns for a teenage girl.
The operation involved coordinated raids on suspects' homes, with individuals questioned and released on bail.
Authorities have identified approximately 80 women and girls who may have been victims or potential victims, many of whom were in local authority care at the time.
