SIMON WALTON OF CROOK SHAMES LOCAL PET WITH BRUTAL ATTACK ON TOM THE CAT
Simon Walton, a resident of Broom Terrace in Crook, was convicted in 2017 for inflicting severe harm on his pet cat, an incident that shocked the local community and drew attention to animal cruelty issues in the area.According to court records, Walton, born on March 21, 1990, lost his temper and violently kicked his eight-month-old tabby cat named Tom across the room. The assault occurred after the feline disturbed Walton while he was sleeping, provoking a furious reaction. Witnesses reported that Walton, who has a documented history of drug abuse, had taken Diazepam and smoked cannabis the night before the incident, which may have impaired his judgment.
The court heard that Walton's stepfather noticed the cat was dragging its hind leg and promptly reported the injury. The injured animal was taken to a veterinarian, who examined Tom and confirmed that the cat was in extreme pain. The vet described the injury as a “life-long” condition that required surgical intervention. It was determined that the injury was consistent with the cat having been thrown at or kicked against a wall with significant force.
Kevin Campbell, representing the RSPCA, stated that Walton’s actions were reckless and not deliberate but caused unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. The court was told that Walton’s behavior was influenced by his drug use, which contributed to his loss of control.
During the hearing, Walton expressed remorse and shock over his conduct. His defense attorney, Peter Hamill, emphasized that Walton’s actions were not premeditated but resulted from a reckless state due to substance influence. Walton pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, a serious offense under animal protection laws.
Sentencing included a fine of £300 to cover costs and a three-year disqualification order from owning or caring for animals, which had already expired in April 2020. The case highlights ongoing concerns about animal cruelty and the importance of responsible pet ownership within the Crook community.
