CROOK MAN CAUGHT WITH INDECENT CHILD IMAGES GETS SECOND CHANCE

A 21-year-old man from Crook has been sentenced for a second time within less than ten months regarding the possession of indecent images of children.

The latest offences preceded his first sentence, so he was not immediately jailed but was warned that a six-month prison term was pending and could be activated if he reoffended.

The defendant, Bradley Townsend-Kerr, appeared at Durham Crown Court for sentencing after admitting three counts related to possessing indecent images of children, following his arrest during a police visit to his home on May 10 of the previous year.

During the investigation, police seized his phone and found 364 offensive images, including 157 in the most severe category, depicting children as young as three.

Townsend-Kerr had previously been convicted in November last year, receiving a ten-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months for similar offences.

He was also ordered to undergo rehabilitation and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for seven years and registered as a sex offender for ten years.

Despite the prior sentence, the current offences were committed before those measures were in place.

His new sentence involved avoiding immediate jail but included a warning about the six-month sentence hanging over him, with the possibility of activation if he reoffended within the probation period.

The court noted it would have been preferable for all offences to be dealt with together, but acknowledged Townsend-Kerr has responded well to rehabilitation efforts.

He remains under the orders from his previous conviction, including the SHPO and sex offender registration.

Recorder Bryan Cox KC highlighted that the court would have dealt with all offences at once had he been prosecuted earlier.

His legal representative stated that he had responded positively to the rehabilitation programme.

The case is a stark reminder of the ongoing threats posed by individuals possessing illicit images of children, and the court's decision reflects a nuanced approach to sentencing repeated offences within a complex legal framework.
