'SEVERELY AUTISTIC' WORKINGTON MAN IN COURT FOR ONLINE SEX OFFENCES
A man from Workington, who his lawyer described as having severe autism, has been placed on the Sex Offender Register following charges related to online child sex crimes.Shaun Jago Williams, aged 31, pleaded guilty to seven charges during a hearing at Carlisle Crown Court.
His legal representative, Peter Wilson, requested that sentencing be postponed to allow for the preparation of background reports, including a psychological assessment.
During the court session, Williams, of Poole Road in Salterbeck, confessed to several offenses, including attempting to engage sexually with a child on July 8, 2021, and a similar incident on July 24, 2021.
He also admitted to downloading 39 indecent images of children classified as Category A, which indicates the most severe type.
Additionally, he acknowledged another download involving three Category B images, and another involving seven Category C images.
In September 2018, Williams distributed a Category B indecent image and was involved in another instance with two Category C images.
His lawyer explained that Williams suffers from 'severe autism' and other health issues such as diabetes, which has impacted his eyesight.
He requested the court to delay sentencing to allow for a psychological report and a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service.
The judge, Michael Fanning, agreed and postponed the case until August 7.
The judge instructed Williams to report to the police station within three days to provide his personal details for entry onto the national Sex Offender Register.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating, 'I need to know more about you...
These reports are important and they will help you.' Williams remains on unconditional bail until sentencing.
It is reported that he was prosecuted after being identified by volunteer paedophile hunters.
