A MAN WHO ATTACKED HIS EX-PARTNER HAVING PREVIOUSLY ASSAULTED HER SON WITH A KNUCKLEDUSTER HAS BEEN JAILED FOR FOUR AND A HALF YEARS

Nyle Tomlinson, aged 29, forcibly pulled a woman up concrete steps and then assaulted her with punches as she begged him to stop.

A motorist managed to rescue her while Tomlinson continued searching for her in Maryport, Cumbria.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Tomlinson, who resides on Darcy Street in Workington, pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful wounding.

The court learned that he had attacked the woman's son in October 2021 within the garden of her Maryport home, following an argument over his treatment of her.

According to court testimony, Tomlinson disarmed the man of a knuckleduster before subjecting him to sustained violence.

Initially, Tomlinson claimed he acted in self-defence, but he later accepted that his actions exceeded necessity.

The assault caused multiple injuries to the victim, and police, who interviewed Tomlinson later, observed swelling and cuts on his right hand's knuckles.

While awaiting sentencing in May 2024 for this prior assault, Tomlinson was asked to vacate the woman's residence.

He reacted angrily during a phone conversation with her, then went to her house, kicked the front door, and when she fled into her garden, he followed.

He threw a can at her, dragged her by her arm along the ground and up some concrete steps, resulting in abrasions, a head injury, and a loss of consciousness, the court heard.

Tomlinson then punched her in the head and body while she begged him to cease.

A passing driver helped hide the woman in their car and secretly brought her into her home as Tomlinson searched the area, said prosecutor Betsy Hindle.

This incident severely affected the woman, who had a history of domestic violence with previous partners.

Her son provided an impact statement describing his anxiety and physical scars from the assault.

In addition to the assaults, Tomlinson admitted damaging a door and window at the woman's residence.

The court noted Tomlinson's prior convictions for serious violence, including an attack involving ear-biting and another for grievous bodily harm, for which he was jailed for four years in 2017.

Defence lawyer Anthony Parkinson stated that Tomlinson's guilty plea was the strongest point in his defence.

During Monday’s sentencing, Judge Guy Mathieson also ordered Tomlinson to undergo an extended two-year licence period, marking him as a dangerous offender, with parole deciding his eventual release.

The judge dismissed Tomlinson's claim of being on a three-day alcohol and drug binge with no memory of the attack, calling it a cowardly excuse to avoid responsibility.
