WORKINGTON MAN JAILED FOR STALKING AND BREACHING COURT ORDER
A man has been jailed for stalking and breaching a Stalking Protection Order.Details heard in court revealed that Murray, who had a Stalking Protection Order issued against him on June 25, failed to comply with the terms of the order and targeted his victim with persistent harassment and threats.
The law restricts a person with such an order from contacting the victim, and breaching it constitutes a criminal offence.
Despite the imposed restrictions, Murray was found to have contacted his victim frequently through phone calls and social media at the beginning of July.
It was noted that the contact was sometimes as frequent as 70 times in a single day.
In addition to the excessive communication, Murray made multiple threats towards the victim, culminating in his arrest on July 18.
The threats caused the victim fear.
PC Rachel Leach from the Cumberland Safeguarding Team said: "Murray continued to contact the victim despite being subject to a Stalking Protection Order.
His behaviour was prolific, with him contacting the victim multiple times a day, asking people to contact them on his behalf, and making threats towards the victim." She added: "Offences of this nature have like in this case have a massive impact on the victim, we would encourage anyone victim of offences of this nature to report it to us." Victims can report stalking by calling 101 or via the Cumbria Police website.
In emergencies, victims should always call 999.
PC Leach also pointed out that people can access a range of support services regardless of whether they have reported a crime to the police.
To access support services independently, contact Victim Support 24/7 on 0808 1689 111.
