WORKINGTON MAN GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR ASSAULTING PARTNER WITH METAL POLE
Dean Jolly, a 34-year-old man from Workington, was involved in a violent assault on his partner during a drunken altercation on New Year's Eve 2024.During the incident, he demanded to see her phone, suspecting infidelity.
Following this, he violently attacked her with a metal pole, leaving her with a scalp wound and bruises.
The woman reported that Jolly also grabbed her by the throat for a few seconds, making it difficult for her to breathe, and she managed to escape by climbing out of the window after he seized her keys and locked the door.
The prosecution revealed that both had been drinking and using drugs at the time of the assault.
Jolly was arrested the next day and told officers: "Sick to death with it...
time and time again.
Third time.
F***ing section 18 again.
I'm sick to death, f***ing third time I've been locked up for this." Despite his history of 14 previous convictions for 19 offences, he had no prior convictions for violence.
He pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and strangulation.
His defense argued that drugs had negatively affected his mental health and that he has recognized this problem, having been drug-free since remanded in custody.
The court sentenced Jolly to an 18-month community order, including 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days and 100 hours of unpaid work, while also handing him a suspended jail term.
The judge emphasized that such behavior towards women would not be tolerated, but noted that Jolly was making progress during his detention.
