SHARON WRIGHT AND PETER MCKENZIE SEATON SENTENCED FOR CHILD MURDER IN HUDDERSFIELD

In a tragic and disturbing case that has shocked the community of Huddersfield, a young girl named Leticia Aaliyah Wright lost her life after enduring a prolonged period of severe abuse at the hands of her mother, Sharon Wright, 23, and her partner, Peter McKenzie-Seaton, 22. The two individuals were convicted of her murder following a detailed four-week trial at Bradford Crown Court, which culminated in their sentencing to life imprisonment. Both were ordered to serve a minimum of 23 years before being eligible for parole.

On November 18 of the previous year, paramedics responded to a distress call from the Huddersfield residence where Leticia was found lying on the living room floor. She was naked and covered in bruises, with visible signs of trauma that indicated she had been subjected to a brutal campaign of physical abuse. Despite efforts to save her, she was rushed to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, but succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of the morning. The medical examination revealed that her injuries were comparable to those sustained in a serious road traffic accident, with the fatal injuries inflicted just two to three days prior to her death.

Leticia’s body bore the marks of relentless violence, with over 100 injuries covering her from head to toe. Her injuries included extensive bruising—both old and new—cigarette burns, and bite marks. The back of her head was described by doctors as a “boggy mass,” with signs of infection on her scalp. Forensic investigators discovered clumps of her hair in a wheelie bin outside the family home, indicating she had been forcibly pulled or torn. Blood traces were found on her soiled clothing, on a pair of fur-lined handcuffs retrieved from the kitchen, and on the living room wall where hair had been wiped or dragged, leaving “swipe marks.”

Further evidence revealed the extent of her suffering. Her body was found to be covered in injuries inflicted during the last four weeks of her life, suggesting a prolonged period of abuse. The police investigation uncovered that two neighbors had expressed concern about Leticia’s welfare, prompting them to contact social services before her death. Social workers from Kirklees Council visited the family home on October 13, where they met with Sharon Wright. However, just days later, her case file was closed, and no further intervention was made at that time.

During the sentencing, Mr. Justice Walker emphasized that Sharon Wright and Peter McKenzie-Seaton were “undoubtedly in it together,” highlighting their joint responsibility for the tragic death of Leticia. Outside the court, Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor, who led the investigation, described the pair as “a heavy-handed, pretty uncaring, pretty unloving mother” and “a man of violence and pretty inadequate in a lot of ways.” He further stated that their combined behavior created a “fatal cocktail,” with the implication that they saw Leticia as an obstacle rather than a child deserving of care and protection.

Leticia’s father, Zaheer Hussain, along with his family, issued a heartfelt statement expressing their grief: “She was a beautiful little girl, always happy and smiling, and she had everything to live for. Losing Leticia has left a huge gap in our lives. We will always remember her and she will always be in our hearts.” The case has also prompted discussions about the adequacy of local safeguarding measures. Paul Johnson, head of safeguarding at Kirklees Council and a member of the Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board, defended the authority’s handling of the case, stating that a review conducted by an independent professional concluded that Leticia’s death “could not have been foreseen,” underscoring the tragic unpredictability of such cases.
